The outside of the media center at the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro

Well Wednesday marked the unofficial start to the Olympics with the start of the women’s football (soccer) tournament. And with it, we officially started our jobs with Rio2016.com.

We woke up and rolled up to the media center around 10 a.m. and were promptly greeted with the longest line we’ve seen so far to get through security and into the center. I imagine that’s only going to get worse as time goes on.

Then we started our work with Rio2016.com and it was interesting to say the least. Three of us put together artist profiles for the main performers at Friday’s opening ceremony while Jasmine has to compile a list of the starting time for the opening ceremony for each country, which took her quite a while.

The rest of us, however, knocked out our stuff really quickly. But if we’ve learned anything in the past five days in Rio, it’s that nothing moves quickly around here. We finished our profiles before 2 p.m. but didn’t upload them to the CMS until around 6 p.m., which meant a lot of sitting in an office and not doing much. The only thing that really kept me going was the start of the women’s football tournament, but even then I was having to squint at a television halfway across the room.

We finally walked out of the media center around 7:30 p.m., over nine hours after we had arrived.

I know I keep saying this and it doesn’t come true, but Thursday should really be a laid back day before the madness starts. The only definitive thing we have on our schedule is a U.S. men’s basketball press conference at 2 p.m. The rest of the time will probably be spent organizing stuff and doing a bit of background research on the people we’ll be covering the next couple of weeks.

Just one day until it all kicks off.

Nothing happens fast around Rio. But we got to see the Christ the Redeemer statue, so there’s that at least.
