Why you should create a webpage for your WordPress theme


So you have a WordPress theme. You’re either selling it on some website like Mojo Marketplace or you’ve submitted it to the theme directory. Each location has a page for your theme. So you’ve got nothing to worry about, right?

Wrong.

If you’ve got a theme, you should have a dedicated webpage for that theme, either on your personal site or company site if it’s from an agency. After all, there’s a reason why there’s a place for the Theme URL in the style.css header.

This webpage is going to be crucial for potential users of your theme and even those who are currently using it. So if you don’t have that dedicated webpage, here’s why you should create one right now.

A place for people to go for help

Because you can include the link to the theme page in the style.css file and have it show up in theme info, people are going to go to that site if they run into any problems. It’s just human nature to use that link when trying to fix a problem.

So that means that the theme page must be ready for those people who need a solution to the problem. A good idea is to have a changelog somewhere on the page. You might also have a couple of basic guides on how to set up the theme and possibly a frequently asked questions section.

And most importantly, there must be a contact form or a way for someone with a problem to get in contact with you if they have a problem. That is essentially a requirement.

Making your theme’s webpage a place for people to get help will only impress your users more. They’ll be more likely to recommend your theme, even if they had a problem. And it makes you look more professional.

Show off your theme more

Also, a theme page is your place to make your theme shine. Unlike the theme’s page on WordPress.org or any other site where you might be selling your theme, you control all aspects of the webpage.

This means you get to decide what goes where, what parts you highlight and how you can best show off your theme. You can add in screenshots or go into more detail about what the theme does.

This is crucial because people most likely will make a decision whether or not to use/purchase your theme. How you present your information and what information you show can be the difference between getting that new “customer” or not. And because you can control this information, it’s important that you create a webpage for the theme.

And finally, this ties into the point above, but it does present a lot more information than the theme page on WordPress.org, if that’s where your theme is.

Now don’t get me wrong, the theme pages on WordPress.org are great. They’re clean and present a lot of the information. And they do a good job showing the design, which is the most important part of a theme.

But there’s still a lot of information that’s not being shown on that page. There’s no changelog and you can’t really list the features. That’s because there isn’t a readme.md file required for themes.

And that’s where a theme page can fill in those wholes. Like I’ve mentioned before, you can put your changelog here and list the cool features your theme has. Those are vital pieces of information that a prospective user needs before making a decision to use/purchase the theme or not.

So if you have a theme and whether it’s in the WordPress theme directory or your selling it off of Mojo Marketplace, Code Canyon and or something similar, you really should have a dedicated webpage that shows off the theme and gives others the information they need.
